Webinar event: Persephone Books - A Celebration of Female Authors

In Michaelmas 2019 as part of our celebration of 50 years of women at St Edmund's, the College ran a successful crowdfunding appeal to acquire the Persephone Books collection of works by female authors, joining only Newnham College and the University Library in housing the entire collection across Cambridge.

Persephone Books began in a room above a pub in the spring of 1998. Founder Nicola Beauman’s original concept was to publish a handful of 'lost' or out-of-print books every year, most of them interwar novels by women. The name Persephone was chosen as a symbol of female creativity, as well as of new beginnings.

We are delighted to welcome Nicola Beauman, founder of Persephone Books, to speak about how Persephone was conceived and it's focus on mostly neglected women writers, and to have this opportunity to publicly showcase the collection, and this unique publishing house.

Delivered as a webinar, starting at 5.30pm on Wednesday 28th October, there will also be a Q&A session at the end. Questions can either be submitted in advance to events@st-edmunds.cam.ac.uk, or during the webinar by using the Q&A button on your ZOOM screen.

Originally scheduled to take place back in April 2020, we are delighted to finally have the opportunity to publicly showcase the collection and this unique publishing house.
