G.L.S. Shackle Memorial Lecture
In this, the eighth in a series of lectures in memory of the late Professor G.L.S. Shackle, we are pleased to introduce our guest Speaker:
Professor Steven G. Medema
Research Professor in the Economics Department at Duke University, Durham USA, where he also serves as Associate Director of the Center for the History of Political Economy. Professor Medema is the Shackle Visiting Fellow at St Edmund's College for the Michaelmas Term 2019.

Lecture Title:
"Why do Economists Use Imaginary Worlds? What the Coarse Theorum tells us about Pollution, Pollination and Parliament"
The Coase theorem is one of the most influential and controversial economic ideas of the past half-century, showing the possibilities of markets in areas previously thought to require government corrective action. Though the fictional world that it contemplates is far removed from the world in which we live, the theorem points us toward a deeper understanding of the complexities of legal-economic reality. In doing so, it reveals both the possibilities and limitations of markets, and provides us with a better base for analyzing the potential roles for government within the economic system.
Attendees are invited to join our Guest Speaker and members of the Shackle Committee for post lecture drinks in the Lower Atrium.
Attendance to this lecture is free and all are very welcome to attend.
